Trap NZ stats are now on our website, thanks to Kaikorai Valley College student Ryan Deo.

Aroha Kaikorai Valley and Turboweb are stoked to have Ryan Deo with us this year. Ryan is working alongside the Turboweb Developers to collect and publish stats from Trap NZ into the AKV website. Keep an eye on these figures as we roll out our trap network and start to make a difference to the predator populations in our amazing valley.

Ryan's Story

Kia Ora. My name is Ryan Deo, a year 13 student at Kaikorai Valley College. I joined the Aroha Kaikorai Valley (AKV) project through my gateway placement. It has been a pleasure to be a part of this community-led kaupapa. I have been given the opportunity to be a lead on the AKV project whilst working at Turboweb . What I like about this project is kaitiakitanga, which translates to guardianship and protection of our environment. The trust's mission is to protect the Kaikorai stream, replace the weeds with native plants and trees, remove predators from the valley and look after our precious birds, all which contribute towards the sustainability of the environment.

Since I became part of this AKV project, I have been working with Joe Marshall from Turboweb, on Application Programming Interface (API) integration on the AKV website. The API integration allows us to pull data that has been reported to TrapNZ. We then utilise that data by displaying it on the website. This allows the user to see the total number of active traps, the number of different pests caught in the last week and to date. We are looking to include an overview map of the project with the locations of traps and number of species caught from each of those. We are doing this to help the community understand our goal for this project and to prove with our data evidence, what difference a small contribution makes.

From the first day I started my placement at Turboweb, I have been learning new skills that have helped me expand my knowledge. I have learnt how an API works, implementing an API in websites, database model, PHP, advanced coding structure and file management. I couldn’t be anymore happier to work with the amazing team at Turboweb and contributing to the AKV project.

Thanks Ryan!

We're excited to see Ryan's cheerful face when he comes into the office, and look forward to seeing these pest trapping numbers climbing higher and higher!
