Sam the Trap Man visits Kaikorai Valley College
Hamiora Gibson, a.k.a. Sam the Trap Man visited Kaikorai Valley College on a snowy Dunedin morning and gave a fantastic talk to students and visitors. His knowledge of the New Zealand bush captivated the students, who enthusiastically responded to his questions. He challenged students to be future problem-solvers to our predator problem and that the pay-off would be a healthy ecosystem for everyone.
Following the talk, AKV trustee Simon McMillan guided Hamiora and guests around the school farm. Sam the Trap Man taught everyone about the seasonality of possum behaviour. At this time of year, possums are often eating the nutrient-rich ends of leaves and throwing the rest away. After discussing the merits of a flipping-timmy trap, the session ended as the snow started falling in great flurries!
AKV wishes to thank the Otago Catchment Community for their collaboration in bringing Sam the Trap Man to Kaikorai Valley.
